Our Team

Matthew Burril

President

Shortly after graduating from University of Georgia with a sociology degree, Matthew started his investment career in 1985 with a small North Carolina firm called Interstate Securities. That firm eventually became part of Wachovia Securities, now Wells Fargo Advisors. At the small first brokerage firm he learned the value of truly listening to customers to determine what they needed from their money.

In 2003 he started BrickStreet Equity Management to serve his clients “with unimpaired simplicity.” He manages his accounts with the capable help of Vice President of Operations Karen Cogburn.

“We really are portfolio managers; establishing BrickStreet allows us to give our clients world-class investment advice while eliminating the overhead of a large organization, which helps us prosper too,” he said.

With over three decades of experience managing assets for others, Matthew’s goal is to make sure BrickStreet is a multi-generational firm that serves parents who become grandparents whose grandchildren become part of the BrickStreet family.

Matthew’s vocation is his avocation, but when he’s not researching stocks or talking with clients, he enjoys a diverse number of activities such as flying antique airplanes, playing golf and playing music. His musical activities range from some affiliated with his church, First Baptist of Asheville to performing with a dance party band called the Vinyl Brothers Big Band. He says his fellow band members are all professionals who wannabe rock stars!

Matthew also enjoys spending time with his family and volunteering with nonprofits such as Young Life, a Christian organization that mentors middle and high school students.

Nancy Dunn

Office Assistant

Nancy joined BrickStreet in 2010 after a long career in gifts retail. She was also a designer and artist for Gate House Lamps. She conducts research, meets clients, and generally keeps the office running smoothly.

“I love this work, the clients, and Matthew and Karen,” she said. “Plus I get the chance to use my Excel skills making reports, charts, and compiling research.”

A talented artist, the humorous cartoons on this site and in commentaries sent to clients are created by Nancy. She says the ideas come from Matthew and she translates those to paper.

Nancy graduated from Mars Hill College with a B.A. in Studio Art. In addition to creating cartoons, she paints portraits and landscapes with acrylics on canvas.

Her husband of 25 years passed away in 2008; they did not have children but she says she’s the crazy aunt to many nieces and nephews, and mom to her dog and cat.

She is a member of First Baptist Church of Asheville and volunteers her time there.

Karen Cogburn

Vice President and Operations Manager

Karen’s expertise in commercial banking, securities transactions, and office management make her the ideal operations person for BrickStreet. She started her career with Wachovia in the 1980s. She became the firm's Director of Operations at Hilliard Lyons in 1992 and continued the same role at Wachovia where Matthew and Karen worked together for more than a decade.

When Matthew asked her to join him to create BrickStreet it was an easy decision. Karen helped establish the firm from the ground up. She has never regretted her decision.

“I worked in banking for a lot of years but this is more intimate, I really get to know people and be a part of their lives. That's why I do it; I love it.”

An Asheville native, Karen attended Mars Hill College. She and her husband Michael have a son Richie, who is married to Rita.

Karen cherishes the beauty of Western North Carolina and enjoys spending time outdoors with her Llewellyn Setter, Annie. She also enjoys spending time with friends and volunteering to help make Asheville an even better place to live. Her current volunteer efforts are focused on the Asheville Humane Society. Karen also serves on the board of the WNC Nature Center and also serves as Vice President of the Executive Committee for the Friends of the Nature Center.
